Although in years past, only doctors wore velvet tams, many professors / faculty members with master's degrees are now choosing to wear a velvet tam in place of the traditional mortarboard (used by students) as it is more comfortable and further distinguishes the faculty from their students.
Unlike the doctoral tam shown below with gold bullion tassel
the master's tam uses a plain black tassel
We keep masterstams in stock in traditional black velvet, or can special make them in your choice of colors.
Most faculty members purchasing master's tams choose the six sided model. However four sided and eigh tided tams are also available.
Extremely tall and skinny people may do better with the 8 corner tam since it tends to look more round, and help "fill a person out", while short stocky people may do better with a 4 corner model, since it is sharper and thus makes the person look "less round".
The cost of the four or six sided tams are $64.50 including the black tassel.
Eight sided master's tams are $84.50 if purchased by itself, or $64.50 if purchased with gown.
When ordering your masters tam, be sure to indicate your hat size or your head size. Using a tape, measure the circumference of your head about an inch over your eyebrow. the size should be in the neighborhood of 22 to 23 1/2 inches. It should be snug but not too tight. Round size to nearest quarter inch. If you are between sizes, err to the larger quarter inch. A cap size would be something like 6 7/8, 7 1/4, 7 3/8, etc.
